You only get that message if your computer is loading an extraordinary number of pages from Multiply at once. This usually suggests that the user either 1) is using some type of "accelerator" program or browser plugin that's designed to load all the links on the page they're currently viewing in the background so that they load instantly when they click, or 2) some form of spyware that repeatedly hammers pages in a similar manner.
Either way, these peoples' computers place an extraordinary amount strain on servers and they need to disable whatever is doing this, as they're using resources that would otherwise be making Multiply faster for everyone. So here are some suggestions:
* Run a spyware check on your computer, especially if you use Windows. There are a bunch of free programs for doing so (but I'm not up to date on which are the good ones to use these days). Something you're not aware of could be accessing pages on the Internet, including Multiply.
* See if you have any browser plugins or "accelerator" programs on your computer (these typically claim to make browsing faster) and disable them. They are able to do this by using servers in an abusive manner, loading tons of links that you haven't actually clicked, but might. (These might also mess with viewing histories on Multiply, making a contact of yours think that you've viewed a post of theirs that you haven't.)
* If you're not sure how to check for these programs or plugins, it might be a good idea to try a different browser and see you can surf using that without bumping into the 'verify' page. (For instance, try Internet Explorer if you're having trouble with Firefox, Firefox if you're having trouble with IE. There's also Opera, Safari and so on.)
* Or, if this doesn't work and you have access to another computer (work? public library? friend's house?), maybe try your account there, to see if the problem persists, for the purposes of troubleshooting.

Ok, does that answer it for you? I know, some of you are like, HUH? Tell you what... just run an ANTI-SPYWARE search... & clear off anything it finds. I'll warn you, it may find a ton of "tracking cookies" you 1st time around... but those are (I was told) pretty harmless... but still good to clear them every so often.
I personally have yet to get this message. *knocks on wood*. So, I can't really be of any help beyond this.
(OH.... a link to a good ANTI-SPYWARE program is AVG by Grissoft.
Hope this helps! :)
thx for the info.. I get em every once in awhile grrrr.
ReplyDeleteI do tend to open up to 20 or so pages at a go (I am a mega multi-tasker) ... while I am yet to receive this message, I do notice that I am sometimes referred to 'crwdcntrl.multiply.com' which I assume means crowd control. When this happens, I take a step back, because it means their servers are being overworked.
ReplyDeleteThe number of pages you can load at a time varies greatly depending on factors such as how many users are online, how many pages total are being loaded at the same time (and we're talking worldwide, not just the individual), and such.
Sometimes just waiting a minute or two can make a HUGE difference.
Uh, hon ... are you sure AVG is your anti-spyware? AVG is generally anti-virus ... (AVG stands for Anti-Virus by Grisoft). They do have anti-spyware components, but are not usually a stand-alone anti-spyware ...
ReplyDeleteEDIT:
Just checked, and it appear the newer version of AVG does in fact specify anti-spyware.
I still don't like it though. 7.5 was beyond criticism IMO, but 8 has caused my computer and firefox and everything else to crash so often it's not funny.
As for cookies, they're just glorified calling cards for the most part. They store your login info, etc, so you don't have to sign in every time you visit a page. They usually expire at some point, which is why you might have to sign in every few days for some sites.
ReplyDeleteI've not upgraded to 8.0 per your "orders"! LOL.... & At one point they offered the Anti-Spyware separate from the Anti-Virus... as the same with there Anti-RootKit. ... However, that's no longer an option.
ReplyDeleteI just have not upgraded mine... & so, I am going to keep as is until I hear different from you... My computer geek! (Mean that in a VERY good way!!) LOL :o)
Uh... these are not them type of "cookies"... they are TRACKING ones... & they always seem to be from sites like "caselmedia" or "ad.yield.manager" or what ever. (You know those thing that pop up even if you have a pop up blocker activated! ... but you know what...
ReplyDeleteSince I've upgraded to FireFox 3.0, I haven't seen any pop up's lately & my "tracking cookies" have been low... SOOOO maybe FF 3.0 has fixed that too! Woo Hoo for FF if they did!! :)
Avg is what I have on both my computers, its free, and its good
ReplyDeleteI have anti spy and it does a check almost daily.. Also it seems to do it here and at work.. So either way I guess I will just put up with it.
ReplyDeleteA cookie is a cookie is a cookie :D They're used in different ways, but they're the same thing :)
ReplyDeleteYou call it choc-chip, I call it choc fudge, DaddyK calls it eaten ... ;)
Aww, I know you luffs me :)
ReplyDeleteAvast is showing promise ...
I was a big AVG fan until I discovered the new one is incompatible with XP. However, I am still running 7.5 on Chrissy with no problems (for an 'unsupported' program, it sure does update a lot)
If it's happening excessively and you are not over-using Multiply, and you're anti-spyware is clear, report it to Multiply. It could be a glitch ...
ReplyDeleteYou better hide thm cookies if oyou want any for yourself :) Kartor will wolf them down.
ReplyDeleteSeriously - I use Ad-aware. from lava soft. it's free and so good.
oh ok :) I thought there was a difference. Thanks for clearing it up! :)
ReplyDeleteYep, DaddyK will eat them right up!! :)
I've yet to look into why they're called cookies (I think of breadcrumbs, myself, the analogy fits), but basically they're a small text file that stores web page information. Casalmedia, ad.yield, etc, use them to gather advertising statistics, amongst other things, but Multiply uses them to store login information. That's why you'll find that you have to sign in again after clearing cookies.
ReplyDeleteMmm, all this talk of cookies is making me hungry :D
(I am a wealth of useful and useless information about computers, but Mama is the authority on all things trivia) :D
Trivia... oh that reminds me... I haven't been to our trivia games in such a long time! LOL :o)
ReplyDeletetrivia games??? i love trivia games!!
ReplyDeletewell... I'll have to post that link here... sometime very soon! :)
ReplyDeletethank you...thank you!!
ReplyDeleteremind me in a PM later on... ok? Not right now... because I will see it... & then forget! LOL Right now I have to post a few more things 1st!! :) Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteokie dokie!!
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to install AdBlock Plus. It eliminates almost all ads on Firefox in my Yahoo and on Multiply.
ReplyDeleteAdblock/plus disables/interferes with some features here though.
ReplyDeleteDoes it? I haven't noticed, but then, if something was blocked, I wouldn't know, would I? Hahahaha
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm referring to is actual features. It interferes with the java uploader and can add additional code in any post or html area that can sometimes render the code useless.
ReplyDeleteAha! I HAVE encountered this! I wanted to upload something but it didn't like the javascript, as I recall.
ReplyDeleteOnly on FF3, I switched back to FF2 and ABP works fine , or shall I say the JavaUploader on Multiply works fine with ABP on
ReplyDeleteGood to know!
