I have an idea for a writing challenge... However, I need everyone's input on this before I finalize this idea for submission. (My challenge date, by the way, is March 19th.)
This will be a two part blog... For this one... I need to know what you think are "modern day inventions"... Ie: Cell phone; Internet; etc...
Things we use constantly now that we did not have (in abundance) back in ... let's go far back as early 80's! (My high school years!) LOL! :)
So, TV's & cars would NOT be included in this... I'm looking a little more recent.
Computers were just coming on the scene then... So, I guess I would include that as a modern day invention.
Now, the 2nd part will be a poll to pick the top so many... to use in my challenge.
However, I may not need a poll, depending on all your comments... we'll see :)

Organ transplants were done (not well) in the 1970's - Were actually capable of extending lives by the 1980's

WiMax (The replacement for WiFi, not really commercial yet, but comming in next 2 years. WiFi has a range of around 150 feet (Internet Hotspots). WiMax has a range of 30 miles, meaning you only need one WiMax tower per city, or town.
Commercial grade Solar Panels
Lithium Cadium Batteries (or why you can now power an electric car, and why your laptop can get 8 hours on a charge).
p3 player, CD player, inverter A/C, laptop computer, cat ... um ... electric can opener? Microwave? Modem.

Ipods, camera phones, Wii and Wii fit, built in water filters on refrigerators, digital cameras, water saving shower heads, plain paper FAX machines, Scanners, paper shredders, internet access on cell phones, navigation systems, google earth maps to view anywhere in the World, DVD's, Smart media cards, hybrid and electric vehicles, convection ovens, weed eaters, the awesome auger, to name a few!

ReplyDeleteWe had one when I was a kid in the early 70's.
You guys are all youngesters. How about color monitors? How about PC's? Those started coming out after I graduated in '80. The cell phones were for rich people and when they came out they were monstrous.
ReplyDeleteHow about airbags? We never had those? Or car seats for infants. I think they just had holders; nothing like today.
No Chlorox Wipes either; I have loved those as a kid. They are so convenient.
Speaking of wipes, did they have baby wipes? I think they were just bringing those out in the early 80's. Lots of people used washrags.
Computer chips in your cars were introduced and I think they're in all cars now.
No Beanie Babies but they had Cabbage patch dolls.
No Ikea in the US either.
No Swiffers. And most homes at the time had carpeting, while now many many homes have hardwood flooring.
Only rich people had pools (we have one now so what does that tell you) so we played in the sprinkler or opened up the fireplugs in the summer, even though we weren't supposed to.
No premade rice crispie treats. No boxed lemon square mixes.
Ok, off to the dentist.

ReplyDeleteOh I just remembered the I robot vacuum cleaner. Although I doubt if they really work that good.
ReplyDeleteI've just remembered those extremely useful emergency items ... the wind-up flashlight and the wind-up radio, to keep in the car ... or in case all the energy providing utilities go out during a bad winter, or worse!

Them wind-up torches are great :) I just found the one Mum and Dad brought back from Wilpena Pound (no, you don't adopt dogs there, except possibly dingoes) which has been AWOL for the last eight months :)
