This is just an interesting read... nothing to be worried about.
My only thought is... if they knew it would happen eventually, then why not take steps to keep it from happening. Maybe that's just a "layman's" thought... & would need more thought into it.
Well... don't loose any sleep over this. Nothing to worry about... At least not as far as we know!

ReplyDeleteLitter in orbit has increased in recent years, in part because of the deliberate breakups of old satellites. It's gotten so bad that orbital debris is now the biggest threat to a space shuttle in flight, surpassing the dangers of liftoff and return to Earth. NASA is in regular touch with the Space Surveillance Network, to keep the space station a safe distance from any encroaching objects, and shuttles, too, when they're flying.

ReplyDeleteDid you ever see the Futurama episode with the huge ball of garbage? This kinda reminds me of that... maybe in a couple of decades there'll be so much stuff up there it'll block out the sun or summat!
Oh well ... that's two less satellites to worry about! It's the bit about one being out of control that's very worrying. Losing control of something that could plummet to earth is scary.
