Well, this is what happened to us today... Someone left a card on my S.I.L's desk at the church, for my hubby. He opened it & it was $500 CASH!!! Nothing was signed on the card. The envelope looked like a younger person may have addressed it.
Hubby's mom tried to tell him, it's a gift given in the respect they know you're in need. My hubby is a bit unsure about accepting it, because he says there are others in the church in more need of it than us.
I told him to keep it... It's a gift from God... & there's a reason why it was given to us at this time. & I reminded him, we are that bad off... or close to it.
So, close that we're talking about possibly selling my Harley. However, that will be in a couple months... We want to see what (if any) amount I get from the Social Security Disability hearing. (Which is Jan 22). He also mentioned that the bank is still working with us on our mortgage.
We still can put that monetary gift to good use... Such as getting Coleman & Sunny there shots. (They're due!) AND maybe need it to fix one if not both of the broken teeth in my mouth. (That'll probably take a lot more than $500 though!! LOL)
I have had something similar happen, except it was $100. All you CAN do is accept it, and put it to good use, either to pay a bill, or buy some groceries, etc. They've most likely done it this way so that you CAN'T refuse it, meaning that they know you'd refuse if they gave it direct.
I wouldn't splurge it on a luxury though. Were it a gift for luxuries, my guess is it would have said "Merry Christmas" or something similar. If it did, then it is a Christmas gift.
My bet is that whoever gave it is watching, and seeing you helped out of a tight spot will make them feel good, a double blessing in that it'll bless the blesser.
Remember too that you can always pay it forward when your circumstances change, so that you help someone else later on. It could well be that this is what this person has done; maybe they were helped in their time of need, and they've paid it forward to you.
Exactly my thoughts, Kitty... Just trying to convince Hubby of that is ... rather difficult. I'll make sure to remind him that we can do the "pay it forward" when we are able.
It may have been from one of the Sunday School classes. His mom was saying they collect all year to give to someone in need. & They do it anonymously then too. But she did say it wasn't her class that did it... It could have been anyone of the SS Classes. No way to tell... & I think Hubby should just take it as it was given... with love!
From what I can tell it was given to you because the giver knew you needed it. I agree with Kitty, it's there for you because you need it, when you're in a situation that you can do that kind of thing, I'm sure you will. Use the money for something you need to do or buy, it's for you, the person or people who gave it obviously don't want you to know it was them, maybe there's a local lottery winner somewhere near you and they're 'sharing the wealth'. :)
Given the circumstances in which the money was given, I would keep it and use it for something you need to do/buy. Like Kitty suggested, you can "pay it forward" when you are in the situation to do so.
I agree with Carrie ... the person who gave the cash gave it that way because they felt any other way would have your husband refusing to accept it. This way this earth angel can give and know that he has no way of saying no. In these circumstances, I feel you have to go with the spirit of the giver and accept the gift as a means of helping your family over a financially difficult time. Carrie is right too in that maybe the giver is paying something forward ... so in turn ... when your family are back on your feet and prospering again ... then you can help out someone else who is in a spot of bother. God works in mysterious ways ... so accept the cash, say a prayer of thanks and bless the giver.
Whatever you do with the cash, Becky ... do it without guilt, as that would defeat the reasoning of the giver.
Thank you all... that is exactly what I'm trying to convey to my hubby. I just hope he will keep it... for we definitely are in need! Thanks everyone! :)
