I was in the middle of typing my previous blog, when I started to smell something very strange.
First I thought it was SenCi overheating
Then I thought it was something in the sink or dishwasher. Or the drain... NOPE!! So, I come back to finish my blog about my current egg.
This odor was like sulfur... which if you don't know smells like ROTTEN EGGS!!
It got so strong I was getting a different type of headache & sick to my stomach.
So, I hurried up to finish my blog & then shut down SenCi & went outside to see if it was something outside. It was at 1st... but then I walked out a little farther away from the house & I couldn't smell it anymore...
Again, I thought for a moment I was going bonkers! But soon as I got close to the door I could smell it again & it was MUCH stronger!!
I began to panic... maybe it's a gas leak.
So, I called the non-emergency police line to see if there were any other complaints. Nope! They said they'd send out the fire department to have them check for a gas leak or Carbon Monoxide.
I opened the garage doors... took the dogs out to potty... then put them in my truck & rolled the windows completely down (because it was about 85° out.)
Paced around for a few minutes & went back inside once or twice... Each time I went back in the odor was much stronger.
I decided to stay out & watch for the fire department. I became impatient... So, I called 911... I told them I was nauseous & was extremely worried.
7 minutes after that call I finally heard a siren (wasn't expecting that!) & 1 minute later a big fire engine (similar to the one in the picture above) was pulling down our street.
The nice firemen walked up to my house & immediately they both said it's probably a sewer back up. (I'm thinking, I'm in the city, so, this is not our expense... wait... my neighbor said he didn't have any strange smells... wouldn't they, if city sewer, have a smell too??)
Well, to put my mind at ease they went in the house & down in the basement & received no reading for Co2.
But soon as they went back up & out by the garage they noticed it again. They called the dispatcher to have them call the sewer department, to call me, to come by.
While waiting I took the doggies back inside (poor things... in the truck & didn't go for a ride!)
The sewer department guy arrived (after talking to him on the phone & explaining the odor) as I was mowing... & he said right away, it maybe a "trap" (don't ask me!) that may be blocked or something. He went to the basement & saw a shower down there. He asked if water had been ran down it lately. I said not in the past year. (Old shower stall.) So, he had me turn the shower on & let it run for about a minute. He too could not smell anything down there.
He then went & checked the drains out front. Came back & said, nope, all is running well.
I'm like... "WHAT IS THAT SMELL???" He walked toward the garage (me not far behind!) & said whatever it is, it's in there! He was baffled too!
So, I went back to mowing & less than 5 minutes later hubby arrived home.
He pulls into the garage & said it's not the sewer! But he went around to the other side of the house to check out a drain. Nope! Comes back around into the garage & said "it's in here"!!
At this time I remembered that one of the firemen had mentioned something that they thought it might have been propane leak. I said we don't use propane... Then it dawned on me the gas grill is propane... It had been making weird noises the past few times I've started it up.
So, I had hubby check it out. It was turned off.
Ok, again... WHAT THE WORLD IS THAT SMELL
His response... probably a dead animal in the garage! WHAT?!?!? How... oooohh... I did forget to open the garage doors this morning... like I'm supposed to on hot days!
Hubby said the garage is too much of a mess to find anything that may have crawled up in something.
Now that I had the garage doors open the smell was not so bad in the house. So, I closed the windows & turned the window a/c's back on.
I finished mowing & at this point I am ready to for a nice cool shower... Then, it hit me that I hadn't eaten yet... AT ALL!!
An hour and a 1/2 later as I'm heading to the checkout, hubby calls & says... "You're taking way too long, which means you're spending way too much money."
HA, maybe... but, I got us FOOD!! We now have stuff to eat!
Don't get me wrong... we haven't been starving by no means... it's just we didn't have hardly anything in the house to fix a quick meal or to snack on (like chips or cookies) for over a month!!
I get home & the odor isn't that bad... So, I figure, hubby is probably right... It's probably a dead animal or something in the garage...
Why was it so strong in the house? Because the vent to the little 1/2 bath in our kitchen goes right out to the garage. Anything that stinks in there permeates that little room (I mean little!! Only a toilet & a small sink. It's cute... & CONVENIENT!!) & sometimes the whole house.
Well, now with all that said... How ironic was it that the smell happened as I was typing a blog about eggs???
(Oh, yeah... now that it's night time & we have the garage doors shut (because we're in the city)... it's getting quite pungent again!!)
