(Never know when Yahoo will change the video from any links I include... so, I hope you will get to see it. If not, I'm sure if you Google: Talledega Nascar you would find another video showing the last lap chaos!!)
I'll do my best to explain it in case this video is not the last lap of the Talledega race.
Picture if you will... My favorite driver, Carl Edwards, (#99) is in the lead on the last lap of the last corner & has another driver (Brad Keselowski, #09) "hooked" to his rear bumper as a solid drafting partner. They get into the back straight, yards away from the checkered flag... one goes one way, the other the other way... Carl goes to block & gets bumped because the guy behind him is not allowed to go below the double yellow line to pass. (Nascar may have to rethink that rule!)
So, a wreck ensues... The 3rd "big one" of the day. Well, it didn't collect many cars... but Carl's car did get up into the catch fence & take part of it out. (I guess there were 7 fans injured. Nothing life threatening though! Haven't read this story yet.)
After Carl landed, he hurries up gets out of the car (we're all thinking cause it's on fire) & he sprints off to the checkered flag... in style! Don't know if it really counts... but he's glad he DID finish the race... though crossing the line without his car may not be "official"!
If you're a fan of Nascar, you'll know that Carl is known for doing back flips when he wins a race... but he said in his post race interview this is the first time he's ever flipped in the car!
Again, I'm glad all are safe, that was a nasty wreck! I pray for the fans that were injured.

I know... I know... there were 187 other laps to the race... & there were TWO other "Big Ones"... but you have to admit, this was the most intriguing part of it all.
The major spins & saves by a couple other drivers pales in comparison. That you'd have to see to even believe... & to appreciate.
They say Talledega is a wild finish... This race lived up to that!
Who says Nascar isn't fun to watch?
Why can't we have NASCAR here? :( Does look like a nasty crash, glad the driver's ok and I hope the fans are alright too.
ReplyDeleteI actually was watching the end of the race with hubby and saw Carl wreck in his car. Brad even apologized in his "victory speech" for bumping Carl, but I still say he could have gone below the yellow line to avoid a wreck. He just couldn't have passed. I read in the paper this morning about the fans who were injured. I hope they're all OK. I'm also glad that the catch fence was there to avoid further injuries to the fans.
