Friday Five - Childhood Toys

Here's this week's challenge...

Last week we had a great time remembering all the old commercial jingles, so this week I thought it would be fun to remember 5 of the toys we cherished as a child.  There were some wonderful toys back in the day, let's hear about the one you loved the most!

I was not your typical little girl. I was a bit of a "tom boy". You put me in a room full of dolls & have one little mechanical car or toy among them, & I always went for the mechanical toy!

However, I did have this collection of International Dolls. They were dressed in costumes from their country. Most of them stayed in their box. Last I remember they were in the attic in the farm house. Hmmm... wonder if they are still there?

*note to self, need to ask Mom next time talk with her.*

Now that you know what I was like as a child... some of these toys may make sense now!

Let's see... I remember...
1. The Rubik's Cube (yeah, a teen in the 80's!!)
2. The electronic handheld Merlin (it was like a Simon Says / memory game, (see the picture above)... but I tore it apart to see how it worked. Which I never really figured out! LOL... I can't believe I found a picture of it! It's on eToys.com ... & it's BACK... and has more games on it now. Ahh... but now I've found a picture of the older version... Click on that link above & you'll see what I had!!)
3. Slinky
4. The board game Aggravation
5. I thinking... Those international dolls are the ones that really are what else I'm thinking of... I wish I could remember the brand name on them. I had a collection... & I never did get to finish collecting them. As I said... I wonder if they're still in the attic! :o)

I'll add comments below... if I think of the name... or my mom does!

Hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane, on The Rambling Train.

  1. Interesting! I used to build little towns out of cardboard and make my own paper dolls! Hahaha
This has been a lot of fun! Remembering good times when we were children is great.

  3. Oh & there was this drawing toy I had.... I wish I could remember the name of it... you had different colored pens & gear looking like things that you stuck the pen in the middle of... to create all kinds of neat looking things.

I can remember the look of it... but can't remember the name!! Anyone know what I'm talking about???

  4. I had a Rubik's Cube, and it drove me crazy until my sister figured out how to take it apart & put it back together. We thought she was a genius when she solved it. Until she admitted how she managed it!

  5. I had one of those too! I completely forgot about it until I read your comment, but I loved that thing. I actually had to google the name, I couldn't remember it either. It's a spirograph.

  6. I am not a part of that group and I think my plate is full with enough groups but I'll stick a few comments in here anyway. I was around when Barbie and Ken first came out. I was happy with the basic Barbie and Ken and her little dream house and then my step Mom made lots of clothes for her and I was thrilled with that. I liked the Wheelo, tinker toys, lincoln logs and of course Monopoly too.

  8. shhh... I did that too!! LOL

Actually... you could tell when I did it, because the stickers wouldn't go back on straight... Then I'd mess it up again to try to solve again... would get frustrated & tear it about again... Finally I did it too many times & I think it broke! LOL :o)

  11. I used to "solve" my Rubik's cube by either taking it apart or changing the stickers around. :D And I remember the Merlin thingy. My brother had one. It was very difficult to win the games on it (for me at that time, anyways). Enjoy your day! :o)

  13. Well, LH... Your list is awesome, I too remember the game aggravation. I loved it. As an adult, I went out and bought it because I loved it so much as a child. Granted living for the most part alone, I never have anyone to play my fav games with. And most of my Barbies got handed down. I still have a few of my originals (and of course I did their hair -with scissors... LOL) The slinky we spent more time tangling it up with 8 of us kids, so they never lasted real long, but now I have one that I take to a concert when we go... The all time fun song and we all have a slinky and yell "slinky" and open and high as we can and the noise it makes along with the song is awesome... Such memories... My mom brought down some of our old toys when my niece was born, so we went down memory lane a few years back. it was awesome... to see some of our old toys that she had saved. One of the biggest was the OLD little people that went with eht Fisher Price barn and all. They don't make those like they did back then. Sorry for ramblin' on your train. Take it easy and I was gald I stopped by. I do have one up if ya get a chance, it is at...

  15. The group page cannot be seen by non group members. Just FYI

If I were to look back over my childhood, I would pick as my favorites:

    1. Baby Secret, because my older sister told me she was real, and I believed her. She read it in the book, A Little Princess
    2. My gray stuffed elephant, with the pink satiny lined ears, blue jewel-like eyes, and pink felt tipped nose (trunk)
    3. Barbies (we actually only had one "real" barbie, and she was my older sister's, not mine. I mean Barbie-type 11 1/2 inch fashion dolls)
    4. The record player we had and the records too, of course. We had story records that we would listen to over and over again. I can still remember a lot of the dialog and songs from Peter Pan and other stories.
    5. Books, particularly the Nancy Drew books my sister and I had.

  16. I could never do the cube, but my young nephew could, made me mad. I loved the slinky but was never a doll person. Good list, thanks for sharing.
