UFC 281 - Wait 5 minutes

The following is a LONG OVERDUE story I was to have written. See, I "issued" the challenge back in April, but never posted my story. That's because I had started it, then was distracted and proceeded to forget about it. I had tried several times to go back and finish it, because I knew I could not give anymore challenges until this one was complete. However, for some odd reason the words would not arrive... until this morning.

The challenge (<--link to the other stories.) I set was a simple one:

Write a piece (in any form you wish & any length) that includes at least TWO of the following weather terms... Snow, blizzard, tornado, sleet, hail, rain, hurricane, wind, thunder, thunderstorm, lightening, and sunshine.

Below is what I had envisioned when I started this all those months ago....

Before I get to the story, let me say this: Though this might read as being from actual life, because I'm writing in the “first person” (also, including a few recognizable “names” & circumstances)... Rest assured, this IS a piece of fiction. With that said, I hope & pray that life never imitates art! ;)

Wait 5 minutes

If you don't like the weather, stick around 5 minutes and it will change… at least that is the saying here in Ohio. Today was no exception to that rule.

Last I heard there might be a small chance of a pop up shower, but it was only 10%.  No one had a clue as to what was about to unfold.

When I woke up, I opened all the windows in the house, turn on the radio, and went about my daily chores.  I was happy for I knew there was not much to do and I would be able to sit outside, in the beautiful sunshine, to continue to on my novel, which I have been neglecting and avoiding.

I had no idea what this day actually had in store for me.

Melodies rang through the speakers as I hummed along.  I was actually enjoying the tedious task of washing dishes, because I was able to look out the window and watch my two dogs romp around in the backyard.  It was nice having a yard big enough for them to run around and chase each other or lay down under a tree, without worry of getting hit by traffic.

Taking a deep breath in an I could smell lilacs and wondered which neighbor had ones that were blooming so late in the year. I closed my eyes and sighed at the remembrance of the lilac trees on the farm where I grew up.

Sunny yelped, bringing me back to present day.  With a quick glance up I realized she and Coleman were just playing.  I giggled how Coleman could always gets Sunny to chase him.  Thinking they should not have all the fun I put down the dish, picked up a towel to dry my hands, and started toward the door to join them.  However, I was stopped in my tracks by the emergency tone blaring from the radio.

My ears perked up as I heard the words Tornado Watch, followed by my county name.  Saying to myself, "That is odd.  I did not think we were to have any storms and it's late October, has to be a mistake.  Guess I better turn on The Weather Channel."

As I picked up the remote I heard rumbles of thunder.  "Wow, that is really rolling in fast."

Next thing I knew both dogs were at the back door barking to get in. I dropped the remote before I could even turn the TV on. Went to let Coleman & Sunny in and was amazed at how blue the sky was.

I opened the door and both dogs shot past me & went straight for the bedroom. Mumbling to myself, "Hmmm, this is not a good sign. I best get my shoes on."

Before I put on my shoes, I decided to investigate where the dogs went to. Once again I had to giggle at them, because they were both hiding under the computer desk and were shaking. That's odd, usually Coleman is barking at the storms & only Sunny is the one to hide.

Taking note and recalling the emergency tone I just heard, I scrambled to find & put on my sneakers.

Walking passed the kitchen window I noticed the sun was still shining and thought either the tone was a false alarm, or something big was about to happen. Not knowing how true that thought would become.

Remembering how nervous Coleman & Sunny were acting, I gathered up a few supplies, just in case we had to high tail it to the basement. Since I still had some supplies from Spring still down there, I knew I did not have to grab but just the jug of water in the fridge, a jacket and the dog leashes. If it really does get bad, there would be no other way to get them to the basement without a little help.

Moving from room to room, I kept glancing out the window to see if I could view what might have spooked the dogs, who were still cowering under the desk. It was not until I reached the bathroom that I saw an ominous dark cloud. I was frozen captivation at the beauty of it's different shades of colors, until I saw a flash. "What was that?" I said aloud. A moment of clarity crossed my mind, it was a transformer blowing. The storm was upon us.

Knowing time was of the essence, I rushed to put the leashes on the dogs and had to nearly drag them both down to the basement. Wrapping each of their lines around different poles, but keeping the brakes loose so they could still walk around. Ran back upstairs to grab my laptop, cell phone & a flashlight.

I had forgot the radio was still on until the static blaring through the speakers. Reaching for the remote, I turned off the static and flipped the TV on. Being an avid viewer of The Weather Channel, it was already tuned to the right station. Then I saw on the red box on the TV scrolling the words: TORNADO WARNING for the following counties... & then the TV signal was lost.

At which point I dropped the remote, without turning off the tv or anything else and bolted down the basement.

Looking around for the safest place I noticed out of the corner of my eye, my 3/4 motorcycle helmet, we had put in the basement for winter storage a few days before. (It was the type that covers your head, ears & has a shield.) Oddly, a story I saw a year or so ago on The Weather Channel, about a little boy surviving a tornado by wearing his bicycle helmet, crossed my thoughts.

I grabbed the helmet, placed it on my head, without strapping it on, or pulling the shade down. I proceeded to sit on the floor with the wall to my back. Huddle around the dogs petting them to reassure them it we would be safe. Sunny curled up in my lap & Coleman began trying to lick my face, until a loud crack of thunder scared him. Instead of barking like he usually does, he tried to get between me & the wall.

As I was pulling him down & trying to hug him, the sound of a jet flew over head. First I thought, “Strange, why would a jet be flying in this weather?” Then I heard loud thumps as if someone was trying to kick in the door, followed by breaking glass. I knew then it was not a jet I was hearing, but a tornado.

My ears popped & even though the noise of the fierce wind was deafening, I could hear both dogs whining. Trying to comfort them was tough because I was flinching with the sounds of what probably was large hail hitting my house.

With each thud Sunny seemed to try to scurry further down in my lap until she was buried under my legs, making it very hard to hold keep Coleman from crawling over top my back.

After what seemed like an hour, but only a mere couple minutes, all the noise dissipated and was replaced with the chirping of birds.

Somehow Coleman had climbed over my back and had me hunched over. It took a few moments to pull him by the leash off of me so I could stand and let Sunny free from my legs. Once I stood and stretched, I had to laugh at the two of them wagging their tales at me.

Holding my hand up to signal them to wait, I proceeded to look around to see if there was any damage to the floor above me. Letting out a quiet sigh of relief, I climbed the steps slowly because I was scared of what might be on the other side of the door or rather what may not be there!

To my relief the door opened easily and at first glance it appeared we had escaped without any harm to our house. I continued out our back door to see if all was okay enough for me to bring the dogs up. A millisecond later something hurled out of the sky, hit my head, and knocked me to the ground.

Thankfully, I had not removed my helmet. Not taking time to see what just hit me, I stood quickly and rushed back into the house and to the safety of the basement, as a few more things pinged the roof.

I sat down against the same wall and began to curse myself for not remembering to wait long enough for the debris from the tornado to fall to it's final resting spot.

Even though I heard sirens whaling past my house signaling the end of the storm, I could not move away from the wall. As I rocked back and forth nervously, the dogs did not leave my side for what seemed like hours.

Only the ringing of my cell phone snapped me out of the seemingly trance I was in. It was my mom to check to make sure I was okay. Trying to hide my frazzled nerves, I assured her all was fine. When asked if we had any damage, I replied I didn't think so, but hadn't had a chance to really get to see yet.

I ended the call once I heard my husband calling out for me & the dogs. Yelling, “We're down here.” He opened the door and came down to check on us. I ran into his arms still shivering with fear.

“Are you ok?”

“Just a little shaken... but not stirred.” I joked.

He grimaced at my bad pun. “Why do you have your helmet on?”

“To protect my head, and glad I did too. Something hit me when I was outside.”

“You were out in this mess.”

“No, after the storm passed I went to go survey the damage, but only made it out the door a few steps when something hit me. Realizing stuff must still be falling from the sky, I rushed back down here. It was that, not the storm that really scared me.”

“Then that explains the dent in the hunk of metal up on the deck.

I reached up to remove the helmet only to find a huge divot on the crown of the helmet and realized how lucky I was.

By now the dogs were jumping up and down waiting for their turn of attention. My husband reached down and released them from their leashes. The three of them started climbed the steps while I stood in place. Looking back at me my husband realized I must have been in shock, because he grabbed my hand and guided me up the stairs.

Moving about the house, he said, “We actually lucked out, the tornado didn't knock any of our trees down, or damage our roof. We have a couple broken windows, probably from debris or hail. Can't say that about any of our neighbors.”

“How bad is it?”

“Bad. I'd say it was at least an EF3 or EF4 tornado.”

We proceeded to step outside and I was amazed at how our house was barely marred, yet each neighbor on either side of had nothing left. Had it been a city neighborhood, we would not have fared as well, because debris was everywhere.

Shaking my head, I muttered, "This was, without a doubt an EF5. I pray no one was seriously injured or worse!"

As I was walking around looking at the destruction, my husband held something up that looked like something from a car and said, “This must have been what hit you. Are you sure you're okay?”

Still holding the helmet in my hands, I nodded and said, “We can thank The Weather Channel for that!”

He looked at me and before he could ask, I reminded him of the story about the kid who was in a tornado and saved by a bicycle helmet.

The dogs started wandered off in the yard sniffing all the new smells as we sauntered over to check on our neighbors. All were either not home or down in their basements and were unharmed.

We all gathered back on our deck and started to recounted our each of our experiences. Knowing this will not be a day any of us would forget.

Listening to the radio, confirmed my suspicion it was an EF5. They called it historic, because no lives were lost.

Moments later I felt a cold chill. Followed by what I thought was rain drops, turned out to be snow flakes falling.

Prompting me to say: “Figures. Don't like the weather............”

Hurricane Irene too much?? (forgive me, I'm venting!)

Below is the comment / rant / vent I posted as a reply to an article on Yahoo News... this had been on my mind all day... upon seeing the headline: "Did media go overboard hyping Hurricane Irene?" made me angry!

Please keep in mind the following is only my opinion.

(For a moment, I thought I'd turn off the "allow replies"... but then I realized, it would be kind of hypocritical of me, not allowing any of you to voice your opinion, as well.)

I will say this... YES, sometimes they (the media) can go overboard... However.... (well, read what I said.) ;)

***************************************

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! I think they DID THEIR JOB!!!!

Even though there was loss of life (very unfortunate!) Just think at how much MORE it could have been, had there NOT been the hype!!

It's like the saying goes: "PREPARE FOR THE WORST & HOPE FOR THE BEST!!"

That's what the media (like The Weather Channel! (TWC)) is there for (during storms like this!)... to prepare us for THE WORST!!!

Now most might night think Hurricane Irene was bad... but ask that of those who lost their homes to flood damage... or those who have lost a loved one!!!

YES, it did need to be covered while it was even still in the Bahamas!! How else are we to get prepared!!

The person who said... "I don't think we needed 24/7 reporting of the storm, especially when it was in N.C. & Virginia."... Needs to realize they were doing THEIR JOBS!!! If you don't live in the area being effected OR about to... then change the channel!!

Sorry, but I'm tired of hearing everyone saying this was not worth it... If you don't think so... then ask the people who evacuated & now do not have a home to go to! Think of them!! They could have lost their life if they did not evacuate!!

ALSO, remember what TODAY is... it's the 6th anniversary of Katrina!!

While I'm typing this, I have TWC on & am seeing an image of one of those famous 100's year old covered bridges in VT be swept away by the flood waters! 1st, think of that HISTORY that is gone! Now think of what would have happened IF the media had NOT warned of the impending flooding problems in those areas... imagine the how many would have possibly been driving around that area to see a bit of history.

Now, think of HOW MANY people live in NYC and HOW MANY tourists use the Staten Island Ferry... had their not been all this "hype"... then the mayor might not have closed the Ferry & think of the loss of life then! NOT TO MENTION how many would have been swept away in the waves that were hitting Battery Park.

Do you all get it now??? Do I need to give more examples???

In this instance... I AM WITH THE MEDIA!!! Like I said... if you don't like what you're watching... then either change the channel!!! In this day & age, there are hundreds to chose from! OR just plain turn it off!!!

Worried about missing a show... well, then... look on the internet to see when it will be replayed... for I'm sure the majority of the networks would do it.

Besides, 1. it's Summer, all the network shows are in re-runs. 2. I know ABC said that if your local station went to Hurricane coverage, instead of the Nascar race, that they'll air it on another channel & they'd let you know. I don't know if that happened, because my station didn't have to break away.

What I do know, is... I'm thankful for the reporters risking THEIR life to save OUR life!!!

Sorry if this upsets you... but all the above is strictly MY opinion and it has been festering for awhile.... so, don't take it personally... I'm just venting! Thank you & have a good day / night!

********************
Again, the above was just me venting, because I saw a BUNCH of replies all up in arms because of all the coverage.

Let me put it one more way... if you were in the path of Irene... do you think the coverage was too much hype??

When I say the path... I mean those who were hit hard, not just with the hurricane force winds... but also all the rain, which led to so much flooding!!

P.S. The photo is of Hurricane Irene! From Twitter.

It's worth the wait

When I was Grammy sitting 2 weeks ago, we had a storm roll in. (Which she slept right through it all!)

So, I grabbed the cell phone & started taking videos... I even caught a lighting strike that sparked a fire in the woods of the neighbors.

I had called 911 & the fire department came out... but from what I understand, they never could find it. (Didn't I mention this before.)

Anyway... I finally edited one of the videos (not the one that started the fire, though)... Here ya go... Hope you enjoy! :)

Thunderous Thursday

This day started of nice & sunny... until about 6:30p... then we had a clap of thunder. So, you know what happened... Coleman barks to try to chase it away. (As always.)

Well, I looked at the radar to see how long it would last. It was just a brief storm. When I looked out the window to see if I could get a nice picture... I saw the sun out too. So, I went out in look for a rainbow.

I did not ever see one, but I did get a great clap of thunder on video. (Don't worry, it was way off in the distance. I was safe!!) Below is the clip... along with a 360 view of the storm clouds.

Have a GREAT day! :o)
(I'm just tickled I was able to upload this to YouTube... didn't think it would take a 3g2 type of file!!)

P.S. Here's a nice pic of my lilacs in the backyard.

It's chilly but, I'M LOVING IT

I really should be working on my hubby's dirt bike club site and my own (non blogging type) personal site (no link yet)... but since I hadn't blogged in a few days... I thought I'd drop one off before I get busy working.

Now I was distracted long enough that I forgot what I was going to blog about! LOL!!

So, let me talk about this photo I've included here...

This is of the Crimson Maple tree right outside my kitchen window. (Can also be seen from the big picture window in the living room.) It's just so lovely every year that I think this year I'll take photos of each stage as the leaves begin to open for the season & post them here so you can share in it's beauty.

I have The Weather Channel (TWC) on in the background, as I often do, & they're talking with Severe Weather specialist Dr. Forbes on how the "tornado safety guidelines" from the Red Cross has changed what to do when in a car when a tornado hits... I have to say I'm shocked they're now saying staying in your vehicle is safer than getting out & going to a ditch... If you can't drive AWAY (not run from it) but away as in an opposite direction!

Here's the bullet points they put up...

1. Stay in vehicle, crouch down below windows.
2. Get in to ditch ONLY if shelter or vehicle is unavailable.
3. Abandon mobile homes.

Now, I have to say... staying in your car is risky, because of flying debris could come through (not just the windows but if it's powerful enough... through the metal!) However, it does seem a bit wiser in the fact if you stop & get out... you may not have time to find a ditch, let alone get into a position with your head covered, fast enough before the tornado hits.

Anyway... just wanted to share that since I'm a TWC nut! ;o)

Speaking of... They have a special series starting May 10th about tornado chasing, called Vortex 2. Mike Bettes is going to be broadcasting LIVE during the chases. I'm looking forward to it. It ought to be quite interesting. Check out the video preview of it, in the above link.

One more thing before I go to tweak hubby's site... I have found a little item that makes a the PERFECT cup of decaf... In my opinion! One of my flights I asked for decaf & that's what they gave me. I was needing more singles at home & to my delight, Wal-Mart carries them in a six pack for just 98 cents!!

Well, this ride has come to it's end. *Reaches up to pull the emergency brake.*

Toodles & *HUGS*!!

more TWC videos about IKE

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Other

I sure hope these links will take you right to the videos that I think are the best from the coverage during Hurricane IKE.

On this one, I believe are setting up to do a live shot, when Jim Cantore is hollering "Heads up."

At least Mike Bettis can laugh at himself! ... & Thankfully he was standing right next to bushes!! LOL.

This guy... well, I feel for him... I was watching this one Live when they interviewed him.

If you see the list to the right of the above videos... it's worth going through looking at each of them... or most of them. (You'll have to look at the titles, though, to make sure they're from Ike... unless you want to watch other related videos!) :o)

TWC's Stephanie Abrahms & Cantore, have a couple video blogs in the list.

Happy viewing! :)

Just a big ol' wind bag

Ike is just a big ol' wind bag... at least for us here in Mid-Ohio... Quite windy. I have to make this quick... because we might loose power... & if we do... I doubt I'll have internet connection.

Anyway... I have another link for you... this is to Weather Underground... this shows current wind speed... well, at least it was... I don't know if one of the Personal Weather Stations (PWS) went off line or what... because it's been a couple hours since it's updated. I was watching it a little bit & I saw one gust register at 31.1 mph... (ok... now I see there was a gust of 47mph... That's Tropical storm force!!!)

Uh... it's starting to get really bad here now... I going to go find my shoes... & be ready to head to the basement. If we hear anything. Ok.. whew... just one big gust for the moment. Scary... I should close the drapes! LOL

I know it's NO WHERE near what my friend Amy went through the other night!! Still... I don't like wind like this!!

Well... I was going to post a video... but it will have to wait.

Storm Pulse that I had been using hasn't updated since earlier today. But you can see that Ike is going to be around for a while!

HERE'S THE VIDEO from earlier... before the really big gusts hit!

Ike is now a TS & heading right for OHIO

The coverage via TWC last night was very interesting to watch. I was glued to the TV until I zonk out. (Shortly after landfall around 3:30a.m.) Good news is Galveston is now in the clear (for the most part)... The bad news, for me... is, now a tropical storm... IKE is heading right for Ohio... It's expected to be here tomorrow at this time. We will not feel NO WHERE near as the winds in which our Texas counterparts felt over the night. Still there is the threat of tornadoes. EEKS!!

Be sure to check out my Nature Photo Album. I have all kinds of screen shots of the satellites & radars. I'll add maybe a few more later on as the storm approaches Ohio. I will also try to find some photos of the waves & etc.

I still have yet to hear from my dear dear friend Amy... I am worried... however, I'm thinking they may not have cell phone service right now. I'm sure she will call or sign on to let us know soon as she can!

Anyway, I am heading off to a "ball" on SL (Second Life)... Yeah, I am still playing on SL... I have a family now... Well, you all know them!... MamaDi, is our mom; Caghs is my sister; Katha is my aunt... & Kartor is DaddyK.

I will try to post some video of the previous Queen's Ball we went to later on... & I'll post more on it then!

*Choo Choo* (that's my wave bye bye now!)

Hurricane Ike updates

From space, Hurricane Ike is a beautiful site. (Photo from Yahoo Photos.) However, it's an ugly & deadly storm on land.

I am involved in this hurricane more than usual, because my very dear friend, Amy (aka Autumn) is right in Ike's path. Don't worry, she & her family has evacuated. She has been calling me every so often & last I talked to her (around 7:30p) they were not getting any rain yet, however, it was very windy. And they have not lost power.... YET!

My heart, thoughts & prayers are with all those that may be in harms way.

P.S. I have added even more photos to my "Nature Album".

The almost PERFECT storm

Even though Hurricane Ike may only be a Cat 2 (at the moment! Winds are only 5 mph away from being a Cat 3!!!)... but it's wind field is much wider than Katrina! Being over 200 miles South East of Galveston, Tx... they are already receiving 17ft waves at the coast.
(Picture is from last night, when it was over 400 miles away.)

In watching TWC's Jim Cantore's live report from the area... I saw anger! "They don't know what they are dealing with!"... Because there are people NOT heeding their warnings. (If you click the link & it doesn't go directly to that report... then scroll down the list on the right.. & Look for the title being his underline quote above.)

Not only are the residents of Galveston not evacuating... but many are going to the coast & driving down the boardwalk road. It is being hammered with waves & starting to bring debris up & across the road! Some are actually out standing at the wall & getting hit with the waves & getting knocked over. Cantore's frustration could be felt just by watching & listening to his description of what is happening & what will happen!

Galveston is ALREADY experiencing flooding!! And to think, only about 1/2 the people evacuated! Are you NUTS?? This is a KILLER STORM!! I heard on the radio the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is calling this as bad, if not worse than Katrina!

Storm surge is expected to be about 20 feet & that does NOT include the waves!! ... The waves are expected to be at least 30 feet!!

Please if you're in the area... GET OUT... & GET OUT NOW!!! It's NOT too late... No more time to wait!
Also, as Ike reaches land, it's expected that even all the way up in Dallas will be experiencing tropical storm force winds. (That's about 75 mph!!)

More updates later... Stay safe!!

P.S. The 1st 2 pictures are from last night. The other is today. Looking at the top picture is why the title about this being almost the Perfect Storm... I mean look at it... it's the shape of a true hurricane symbol. It's just missing a well defined eye at the time.

I'll be posting all my screen shots in my photo albums here shortly... so, scroll up & click on "Photos" to see my albums.

This is the most recent satellite image...

IKE .... & tomorrow is September 11... a day not to forget!!

I believe I am going to go "silent" tomorrow. Except for answering a few messages... I think I will take the time tomorrow to reflect.

If I post anything tomorrow... it will be tribute blogs like I did last year. Just as a reminder.

I'll try to find the ones from last year & link them in this blog... but later on.
Have a GREAT Wednesday... & DON'T FORGET tomorrow!!!!!

P.S. Also... HURRICANE IKE is getting stronger... and it's heading more north than they thought yesterday!! Please... Please... if you're on the coast... keep any eye on this storm!! Here's that one link again that I found the other day... from StormPulse... It's a great one... especially for tracking!

Another great link for tracking hurricanes...

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Other
This was part of a link that my dear friend Amy Sunshine sent me... It's no secret... she lives in Tx... & so, she's keep an eye on Ike just like the rest of the gulf.

Anyway, StormPulse is one of them "techy" sites that I love so much! There is so much you can learn about the hurricane from it.

I encourage you to bookmark it if you live on any coast!! If you don't live on the coast... I still encourage bookmarking!! It's THAT great of a site... & I've only just begun to scratch the surface of it! (Meaning, still checking out what all it does!)

When you do visit this site... slide your mouse pointer over one of the cities & hold it... you'll get a line from the hurricane / storm to that city... Then just above the information about the hurricane it will pop up the distance!!! SO COOL!!

Right now, Ike is 1024 miles from Corpus Christi, Tx!! & Heading that way!!

Enjoy!! :o)

2 more not far behind... at least!

Looking at the Atlantic you can see we are heading into PEAK hurricane season.

Gustav is almost upon Louisiana. My heart, thoughts & prayers go out to all in harms way! I sure hope no more lives will be lost! (I heard last night Cuba was reporting over 80 fatalities.)

Anyway, I promised you an update.... so... here it is.... THANKFULLY Gustav is not the record breaking storm I thought... The pressure is up to 954mb... which means it's weakened... Hopefully that will be the trend!

What is scary though, they're predicting a high, as in 15', surge. I pray the levies will hold!

HURRICANE WARNING: Gustav (& Hanna)

Gustav may be a record breaker... I have been watching the pressure in this thing drop & drop... & with each new report it seems to be more grave.

As of 5:00p.m. EDT Gustav is at 941mb. (If you'll recall in the record breaking year 2005, Wilma had the lowest pressure ever recorded @ 882mb.) The millibar pressure is interesting to watch because it shows you how fast a storm is intensifying. Gustav is now over Cuba right now.

If you have the ability to watch The Weather Channel, I highly suggest it. They are very informative... not to mention they have a few good looking meteorologists! (Had to lighten the mood a little! LOL)

New Orleans is already under a mandatory evacuation. They are not going to make the same mistake as they did with Katrina! HOWEVER... Gustav can end up anywhere from Gulf coast of Texas to panhandle of Florida. So, please be on guard!!

The picture above is from the NOAA website. The link will take you to a whole laundry list of link of satellites... the best one to click on is the Gustav Visible LOOP (I believe it needs Java... if you can't run Java, then just click "image")... however, if you're viewing it later... the visible does go black at night. Then you can click on the Infrared link... but it's not as impressive to me as it is to see the clouds view... to me!

More updates later!
P.S. Don't take your eyes off Hanna, either!!!

Fay has arrived

We are FINALLY getting some much need rain here in Mid Ohio... thanks to the remnants of TS Fay. Thankfully though we are not getting the downpours & rough weather like some parts are. (My hearts, thoughts, & prayers go out to you folks who are!!)

With Fay almost a memory, all eyes now turn to the next storm... GUSTAV... please, if you're on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico... please stay tuned to the reports. There is no telling yet which way he's going to turn... yet!

Well, tonight hubby & I are going to the movies. He wants to see The Dark Knight in the theaters. So, maybe I'll have a review for you in a few days. (Hmm... I never did the review of Hancock, did I? I will have to keep that in mind!)

That's it for now!
P.S. Sorry again for being so quiet last week... I sure hope I didn't worry anyone... besides my dad! (He called me Friday, making sure I was ok, because it had been since the Friday before since I last blogged here on The Rambling Train! He doesn't see the R.E.D. ... sorry to worry you Dad!)

Later!!

If you didn't hear yet, Texas is under the gun again with another tropical storm...

Here is a link to NOAA's site that will show the current track.

(It's so new right now, I can't find a storm track map on Weather.com!!!)

Keep the Texans in your prayers!! (Our dear friend Autumn is one of them!!)

Tracking Dolly - Now a Cat 2

My readers from 360 may remember that I for some reason I have a fascination with the coverage about hurricanes.

Well, last year was a bit dull... Today has already made up for that! For several reasons... 1 is that The Weather Channel (TWC) is now in HD & the video & radars & etc is amazing!! (Add Jim Cantore & Mike Bettis (who is from my area!!) into it... & to me it's... AWARD WINNING! LOL)

Then I go to TWC site & their interactive radar has improved over the past year! (I've been using it for a while now... & it's great when you want to zero in on your street!!) That link will take you to the radar for South Padre Island where Dolly is coming ashore... Only thing is... if you click on this tomorrow or later... it won't be as impressive as it is now. (Just fair warning for those who read this later!!)

So, anyway... I just wanted to share the site with you... & be sure to "play around" with the Transparency bar at the bottom of the radar window. Quite interesting to say the least!!

(FYI - The picture above is NOT Hurricane Dolly... it's just from Google Images.)

Blizzard of '08 (from Ohio)

Time to hop aboard for another ride on The Rambling Train!! Where she stops... only God knows! LOL
(maybe this should be my ... well can't be a tag, because it's in the beginning... I'll think on it!) LOL

Anyway, I wanted to share with you the radar by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) showing you what I personally am classifying as "The Blizzzzzard of '08"!! (love them z's! LOL)

It shows the past 24 hours of satellite... it may take a few moments to load, so be patient, because it's well worth it!! :) As you will see.... it's NOT over yet!!

That is also a great link for when there are other storms... like hurricanes... to watch. Very very interesting!

I'm going to try to get a screen shot of these... because some of you may not have the ability to see this... due to dial up or slow connections...

Or for those who view this blog later on... because I do believe that link will load current images. I think!! (Please comment below if you need to see them... I may not post them right away... unless someone asks!!) :) Thanks :)

Anyway, I have this bookmarked in my Wx (sorry, that's broadcasting short cut for Weather!) Folder. So, if anyone is looking for it again later on... feel free to contact me! :)

(Yeah, I usually have neat things like this bookmarked!) :) :)

OH... by the way... I have uploaded more pictures into my "Winter in Ohio" album. I only wish I wasn't laid up with this back injury... because I'd love to get down to the farm to take some shots... but even if I could... well, the lane has not been plowed... so they all are SNOWED IN!!!

Oh, FYI - The Farm is where I grew up, in Lucas, OH... it's only about 10 miles away from where I live now. (But 20 minutes to get to... Country roads, you know! LOL)

It now consists of my mom, & my son - Mike, up at the farm house, their 4 dogs (Buster, Todd, Sassy, & Bianca) & many cats... don't ask me to name them all!

IF you want to see pictures of some of them... I believe I have some uploaded to my Flickr site... I'll try to find the link, just leave me a note below if interested! If enough are... I'll add a link on my front page!! :)

Moving on down to the start of the lane (by the way, it's a 1/2 mile long. If I can find a good satellite image of it... I'll post it somewhere.... & Yes, we had to walk it to get to the bus! Mike does too!) Ok, anyway... at what we call "the other house / or Grandma's" is... Grandma, my sister Gina & her hubby Aloys... one of the newest citizen's of the USA, as of yesterday... WOO HOO!!! (Oh, I'll have to do a review on that!! LOL)

Anywho... I just wanted you all to know what I meant by "the farm" because I don't think I talked about it since my 360 days & I know I have new readers!! :)

Ahhhh, the memories! (I mentioned them some where else... & I may again later on... but right now I'd like to post this blog for you all to see... before the radar images change! LOL)

Time to disembark now. Hope you enjoyed the ride! Stay tuned... more rides aboard The Rambling Train soon to be posted!
(Man, this was a GREAT idea... the name change! I'm having SO MUCH FUN with it!!! LOL!!)
